Mrs. Marie Lewis Hooker Judson passed away peacefully at RidgeCrest Assisted Living on March 15, 2017 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s, where she had been a residence since 2014. Marie was born in Patrick County Virginia and was a long-time residence of Mt. Airy, where she graduated from Mt. Airy School in 1941. She was instrumental in organizing the ladies Auxiliary at Northern Hospital of Surry County. As a former employee of Northern Hospital insurance department she implemented the first Medicare Program for the hospital. Marie was a life time member of the American Freedom Association where she assisted with the NC High School World Peace Speaking Contest and was a chaperone for their yearly trips to the United Nations and Washington, DC. She was instrumental in organizing the Mt. Airy High School Women’s Golf Team. Marie was a member of the Mt. Airy Women’s Club, and an active member of the Mt. Airy Chapter of the P.E.O., a philanthropic organization. Marie excelled at growing many plants and flowers around her house and loved sharing flowers and vegetables with her family and many friends. Marie was an avid golfer, playing well into her 80’s. She traveled extensively, and kept up a regular correspondence with the people she met from many countries. Marie loved good food, socializing, and had a wonderful smile that could light up a room. Marie is survived by her daughters; Donna Grady-Moore (Sonny Grady), June Grogan (Rick), and son Joe Hooker; Stepsons Rick Judson and Bill Judson; stepdaughters; Sherry Harris (Andy), Jan Johnson (Rob) . She is also survived by grandchildren, Rebecca Hanks, Norman Snell (Stacy), Allyson Bond (Sam), JoEllen Petersen, Tim Moore (Laurie) and Mary Julia Smith (Richard), Charlotte H. Lucas, Liz H. Carroll, Christine Hawks, Nathan Johnson, Creed Johnson, Matt Judson, Kelly Smide-Bush, Ashley Hornbuckle, and Ryan Judson. She has eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dellie Lewis, and a number of nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by parents, George and Ethel Hull Lewis; husbands, Joseph Howard Hooker (1969) and Dave Judson (1991); brothers, Bill Lewis, Troy Lewis, Harold Lewis; sisters, Julia Coins, Mildred Raulston, Ruby Booker. The family wishes to thank all those who provided wonderful care for her at RidgeCrest during the last two and a half years, and the kind-hearted nurses and doctors at Northern Hospital of Surry County. The visitation is on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home, 206 West Pine St. Mount Airy, NC. The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church 326 S. Main St., Mount Airy, NC , with the Rev. Griff Gatewood officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, 1400-1500, North Main St., Mt. Airy, NC. Memorial gifts may be made to Mt. Airy Museum of History, 301 N. Main St., Mt.
