Mrs. Maurine Fender Allen, 91 of Winston-Salem, NC died Saturday, April 26. 2014. She was born to George and Maude Wright Fender, June 26, 1922, in Farina, IL. Maurine met her husband, William Gordon Allen while attending high school. After graduation she attended Southern Illinois University, before moving to St. Louis and going to work as a secretary for Grove Laboratories. Maurine and Gordon married on June 9, 1945 , and lived in St. Louis. In 1965 the relocated to Mt. Airy with their two children, Richard and Linda. Active in politics, Maurine worked to build the Republican Party in North Carolina, running for state Senate in 1978, and serving as chairman of the Surry County Board of Elections. She was a lifelong tennis player, learning the game on a dirt court her father built for her on an empty lot across the street from her childhood home.. As an adult, she helped organize tournaments including the Mt. Airy Open. She was a Life Master bridge player. She is preceded in death by her brother, James Isaac Fender and her daughter, Linda Allen Barringer. Surviving are her husband, Gordon and her son, Richard and her two grandchildren, Andy and Will. A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Monday, May 5, 2014 at Skyline Memory Gardens. Rev. Worth Green will conduct the service. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home.
