Mrs. Garnet Lee Hennis Shelton (Pinky) passed away September 6th at Northern Surry Hospitial. Mrs. Shelton was born 10th August 1942 in Surry County, North Carolina to the late Mrs. Elizabeth Fawcett Burke and the late Mr. Cecil Forrest Hennis Jr. Surviving to cherish her memory are her husband of 50 years, Mr. Denny Ray Shelton of the home. Sisters Mrs. Katherine Hennis Seivers (Kitty) and husband Mr. Michael P. Seivers Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Hennis Haynes and husband Ricky Haynes all of Mount Airy. Her Brother Cecil Forrest Hennis (Bud) and wife Judy Hennis of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Mrs Shelton has a beloved niece who was like a daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Fawcett Seivers of Charlotte, North Carolina. Two special nephews Mr. Cecil Forrest Hennis III and Mr. Ryan Perry Hennis both of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Pinky loved her cats Midnight and Matillda. Mrs. Shelton began her Banking career fresh out of Mitchell College in Statesville North Carolina in 1961. She started in the bookkeeping department of The First National Bank of Mount Airy. She continued up the ranks as the bank merged several times. In 1972 the Bank merged with NCNB where she was named Assistant Vice President and remained in that position with Nations Bank and Bank of America until her retirement in May 2008. Pinky was a respected banker in the business community of Mount Airy. Mrs. Shelton was very involved in her community. She served on the Salvation Army Board for 34 years. She was also on the Mount Airy Rescue Squad for many years. She was a founding member of The Sandy Level Community Center Board. She sold "many a collard green sandwich" during the Autumn Leaves Festival over the years. Mrs. Shelton was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Mount Airy. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:OOPM Thursday the 10th of September at the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy. With Rector Ray Hanna officiating. The Family will receive family and friends in the Koinoia Room at the church, one hour prior to the services. The Family wishes to express our love and gratitude to the incredible staff of The Northern Surry Hospital for their love and care of the human body and human spirit. Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army of Mount Airy, North Carolina and The Trinity Episcopal Church of Mount Airy, North Carolina.
