Mrs. Roberta Glenn Springthorpe, 81, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday afternoon, September 18, 2015 at her home. Berta Glenn was born August 12, 1934 in Surry County. She graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1952 and attended Salem College. She married John Springthorpe, Jr. in 1953. Berta Glenn was a pioneering business woman, owning several businesses. She had a long civic history, serving as a founding member of the Mount Airy Restoration Foundation, The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, the Duke University Council on Aging, The Shepherd's House and the Embassy Club. Berta Glenn was active in Trinity Episcopal Church as a Sunday School Teacher and in Scouting as a Den Mother. She was recognized as Mount Airy's Citizen of the Year in 2015. Berta Glenn is survived by her husband, John Jr; her children, John III and his wife Karen; Bruce and his wife Tammy; Celeste Tsaklis and her husband John; Dwight and his wife Suzanne. Berta Glenn has 10 grandchildren; Brooke, Rev Jack Lynch, Glenn, Dwight II, Julia Poole, Nick, John IV "Jay", Gordon Lynch, Glenn Lynch and Sarah Katherine "Katie" and two great-grandchildren; Celeste Lynch and Kensington Poole. She is also survived by her brother, Wayne Ashburn and her sister Lynda Doby and husband Wade. Berta Glenn was preceded in death by her parents, R. Glenn Ashburn and Julia Martin Ashburn and one grandchild, Michael Holden. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Mount Airy, with the Reverend Jack Lynch and the Rector Ray Hanna officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
