Mrs. Velma C. Stewart West

Mrs. Velma C. Stewart West, age 89 of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at home. She was born in High Point, North Carolina to Myrtle Simmons and C.B. Carter. Her parents passed away during her childhood, so she was raised and educated at the Mills Home in Thomasville, North Carolina. Mrs. Stewart West continued her relationship with her Mills Home family until her death.

Mrs. Stewart West was preceded in death by her five siblings and by her husband of more than 60 years, Joseph D. Stewart. She was fortunate to find love again late in life, marrying George D. West of San Diego, California on April 19, 2014.

Mrs. Stewart West was an avid reader, seeking to satisfy her natural curiosity and improve her understanding of global and local events. She earned a degree in data processing and became a paralegal, both at a time in her life when most are considering retirement. She loved and was loyal to her country, her family and her friends. Her favorite place on earth was her farmhouse in Patrick Springs in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her indomitable spirit and caring soul will be missed by many.

Mrs. Stewart West is survived by her husband, George West of Patrick Springs; five children, Joseph Stewart and wife, Louise of Naples, Florida, Edward Stewart and wife, Brenda of Jefferson City, Missouri, Mary Nardone and husband, Steven of Atlanta, Georgia, Janice Roach and husband, Tom of Augusta, Georgia, and Richard Stewart and wife, Tammy of The Woodlands, Texas; and thirteen grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31st, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant View Baptist Church in Patrick Springs, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 at the church, with funeral services immediately following. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Stewart West had asked that donations be given to the Men's Ministry Fund at Pleasant View Baptist Church, 4432 Pleasant View Drive, Patrick Springs, Virginia, 24133. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is handling the arrangements. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
