Nancy Dowell Adams

Mrs. Nancy Dowell Adams of Greensboro NC, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2024.  Mrs. Adams was born on May 22, 1933, to Ambrose L. and Lessie Deatherage Dowell in Mt. Airy NC, along with her identical twin sister Betty.

She graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1951, and she and Betty were co-chairs of the high school cheerleading squad.  Nancy was a member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Airy prior to moving to Greensboro for college and life events that took place after that.

Nancy attended Women's College of Greensboro (now UNCG) and graduated with a BA in Commercial Development.  She became a department head for Key Homes and rose to the rank of Vice President during her career.

Nancy married AL Adams, Jr. of Southern Pines, on March 16, 1956.  They had one son, Louis, who died unexpectedly in 2008 at the age of 46.  His passing was very painful to both Nancy and Al, as he was their pride and joy.

Mrs. Adams came from the largest family in Surry County, with 14 brothers and sisters.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her son Louis; her brothers Byron, Leo, Charles, Harry, Roscoe, Jack, and AL Dowell, Jr.; and her sisters Patricia Terrell, Betty Dowell Neese, Thelma Dowell, and Edith Dowell Joyce.  Survivors include her husband, Al Adams Jr, of the home; her beloved grandchildren Victoriana Adams (James Winkeler), Illinois, and Haley Adams, California, and greatgrandchildren Nikki Adams, Milo Adams-Winkeler, and Emry Adams-Winkeler.  She is also survived by her sisters Carolyne Churchill of Mt. Airy, Opal Marion of Winston Salem, and brother Jimmy Dowell of Mt. Airy; and a number of special nieces and nephews.

Nancy and Al also attended First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, where they both are members and have attended for over 65 years.  Nancy was active in Sunday School, an Usher, leadership for Senior Citizen activity groups, and many other programs.

Nancy has been described by people who knew her as a person of beautiful faith; a person with a giving spirit, and a person who always tries to help others and see the best in them.

A celebration of life will be held for Mrs. Adams on Tuesday May 14th, at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro at 1:00 pm.  Memorials can be made in her honor to the church.
