Mrs. Nannie Bell Hall Smith, 98, of 109 Old Smith Trail, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2006, at her home. Mrs. Smith was born May 8, 1908, in Patrick County, VA, the daughter of the late James William and Elizabeth Bowman Hall. Mrs. Smith was known by her family and friends as "Granny Smith." Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and, until her death, was the oldest living member of Stoney Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Phyllis and Troy Tolbert and Clara Smith Berrier, all of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Hersel and Eva Smith and Silas Junior and Margaret Smith, all of Mount Airy; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; a sister, Myrtle Hall Inscore of Ararat, VA; two half-sisters, Vergie Hall Hawks of Ararat, VA, and Helen Hall Collins of Collinsville, VA; a brother and sister-in-law, Willie G. and Clarice Hall of Mount Airy; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Joe S. Smith; three infant daughters, Carrie Smith, Katherine Smith, and Iris Smith; a son, Calvin J. Smith; a son-in-law, J.C. Berrier; a granddaughter, Linda Tolbert Crist; a grandson, Billy Wayne Tolbert; six sisters, Wavie Woodall, Sally Slate, Verda Eades, Nova Newman, Lelia Smith, and Bertha Noonkester; and three brothers, N.T. Hall, James Hall, and Robert Lee Hall. The funeral service will be held Saturday, August 5, 2006, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Elder Jimmy Joyce, Elder Walter Thomas, and Elder Edward Bowman. Burial will be in the Booker-Busick-Smith Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
