Patsy Ellen Atkins Gordon

Mrs. Patsy Ellen Atkins Gordon, 69, of 507 Farmbrook Road, Mount Airy, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 11, 2014, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Gordon was born November 10, 1944, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Ashby Atkins and Ossie Iola Gwyn Atkins Norwood. Patsy graduated from Mount Airy High School, earned an Associate in Applied Science degree from Surry Community College, and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Winston-Salem State University. Patsy was a registered nurse at Northern Hospital of Surry County for many years. She was a devoted Christian and a member of Bannertown Baptist Church, where she served in various capacities. In addition, Patsy was a member of the Round Peak Chapter #377 Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as organist. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Rixie Ray Gordon of the home; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Benita and Alton Jessup of Mount Airy; an uncle, the Rev. Robert Taylor of Thomasville; and many special cousins. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by an infant sister; and a sister, Charlotte Atkins. The funeral service will be held Friday, March 14, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Bannertown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mickey Cogdill, the Rev. David Allred, and the Rev. Keith Love officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by Round Peak Chapter #377 Order of the Eastern Star. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Bannertown Baptist Church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Bannertown Baptist Church Building Fund, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
