Paul Hermon Hawks SFC Retired age 86, of Mt. Airy passed away on Sunday morning February 16, 2014, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born on April 8, 1927 to the late George Washington and Sarah Ennice Tompkins Hawks. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Evola Vernon Hawks; one son Gregory Paul Hawks; eight sisters Grace Blevins, Creola Thompson, Blanche Childress, Alma McCraw, Hattie Brown, Ethel Cuddy, Marie Thomas, Ruby Thompson; two brothers Earl Hawks and Ernest Hawks. He was retired from the military with two years in the US Navy during WWII, and with twenty years of service with the US Army. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law Andrea and Joe Sloop of Ararat, VA; son Michael Wayne Hawks of Hickory, NC; by eight grandchildren Tracie and Paul Frost, Johannah Sloop, Andrew and Giselle Sloop, Ben Sloop, David and Sharon Sloop, Zachary and Brianna Sloop, John Paul Hawks, Jason Lee Hawks; by eight great-grandchildren Eva Jayne Frost, Arin Rose Frost, Eli Frost, Dorothy Frost, Eli Hawks, Jackson West, Hadley Sloop, and Annelie Sloop. Mr. Hawks was beloved by his family. He had a good sense of humor and loved telling stories from his childhood days growing up on a Surry County farm that bordered the Fisher River. He was an avid reader and gardener and loved researching his family history. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday February 20, 2014 in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson with Burial to follow in the Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2018 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. Brother Joe Sloop will conduct the services. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home on Wednesday February 19, 2014 from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Flowers will be accepted or memorials maybe made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care 401 Technology Lane Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030 . Many thanks are extended to the fine staff at the Northern Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit and to the staff of Mt. Valley Hospice for the all the kindnesses shown to Mr. Hawks and his family. "The family also wishes to express appreciation for Pastor Bill Spurlin of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church for his friendship and frequent visits to Mr. Hawks during his extended illness. "
