Mrs. Peggy Ann Whittaker Beamer, 71, of Mount Airy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 5:05 AM on Monday, April 30, 2012, from the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Beamer was born June 4, 1940, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Sarah Belle McMillan and Ted R. Whittaker, Sr. Peggy worked in banking for most of her adult life. She started working at The Surry County Loan and Trust Company after graduating from Beulah High School in 1958. She later retired from Pine State Knitwear. Peggy fought her illness for almost eight years and because she had such a big and loving heart, she was more concerned about the well being of others than herself. She had a kind and generous spirit who would try to give something to everyone she knew. Peggy loved her animals, which were always treated like her children. Special cousins James Lee and Alma McMillan took care of Peggy in a special way all the years of her illness and before. They did for her as they would their own sister. Peggy was a devout Moravian and a longtime member of Grace Moravian Church. She lived an exemplary Christian life and was devoted to her family. Her family will miss her terribly, but they take comfort knowing that she is in heaven where she always wanted to be. She is survived by her loving brother and sister-in-law, Ted. R. and Sybil Whittaker of Winston-Salem; her loving cousins, James Lee and Alma McMillan, Wallace McMillan, Jessie Parsons, Annie Lee Beck, and JoAnn Bentley; a special sister-in-law, Jerry Lou Limer of Galax, VA; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Bill and Diane Beamer of Galax, VA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Beamer was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, George Heath "Joe" Beamer, in April 2010. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 3, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery, with the Rev. Tony Hayworth officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family wishes to give special thanks to her hospice team, Chrystal and Barbara, who took care of Peggy at home; the staff of the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home; her Moravian family, especially Hubert McMillian and Lavinia Tillotson; and her oncologist, Dr. Nick Chrysson, Jr., who was also a friend. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Grace Moravian Church, 1401 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. We all love you. May you rest in peace, Peggy, our loving sister, sister-in-law, cousin, and friend. The family is grateful for God's promise found in Genesis 28:15, "I am with you and will watch over you... "
