Polly Flippin Greer, age 78 of Stuart, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2025 at her home. She was born in Patrick Couty on January 17, 1947.
“On my honor, I will try…” If you ever had the blessing of knowing Polly Greer, then you know those words - the beginning of the Girl Scout Promise - weren’t just a motto to her. They were the way she lived. Every day. Every moment. Quietly, faithfully, and full of love.
Polly was a lifelong Girl Scout – not just in name, but in spirit and action. She truly lived the Girl Scout Law. She was honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong. These weren’t just values she believed in – they were the very foundation of who she was. She gave her time, her heart, and her spirit to lift up generations of young women.
Through her years in scouting, Polly traveled across states and oceans – always curious, always present, always ready to learn and connect. No matter where she went, she brought warmth and wisdom, and that soft laugh we all loved. She didn’t just collect things from her travels – she collected people. Friends, memories, and little moments of joy that she carried with her and shared freely with the rest of us.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family – especially her beloved granddaughter, Maigan. Their bond was something sacred: full of trust, love, and understanding. When Maigan’s boys came along, Polly’s heart expanded again. Her great-grandsons were her pride and delight, and her eyes lit up every time she spoke of them.
Polly was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ted Greer. While we miss them both deeply, there is a special comfort in knowing they are reunited. Polly often joked about one particular thing; she told the story, very seriously, that Ted shaved his beard once and she absolutely hated it. So – Ted – for Polly’s sake, we hope the beard stayed.
Polly also found joy in simple pleasures. She was a devoted Elvis fan. We imagine her now, hand in hand with Ted, enjoying a heavenly performance of “How Great Thou Art.”
But more than anything, Polly loved the Lord. Her faith was deep, steady, and unwavering. She gave without expecting return, forgave without keeping score, and trusted God even when life was difficult. Her relationship with Him shaped the way she loved and served others. And now, she is resting peacefully in His arms.
Polly was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Greer, and her parents, Sanders and Myrtle Flippin.
Polly is survived by three daughters, Wendy Greer of Roanoke, Cindy Greer (Sam Reynolds) of Stuart, and Tina Greer (Chad Lane) of Longmont, Colorado; a granddaughter, Maigan Hazelwood (Andrew) of Stuart; five great-grandsons, Dylan, Nathan, Adrian, Jordan, Abram; as well as many very special cousins and extended family.
Polly, thank you for showing us what it means to live with purpose, to love without limits, to service with joy. And thank you for reminding us – through your life, your faith, and your love – that we are better for having known you. We’ll see you again one day. And until then, we’ll keep your light shining.
