Ray Hooker

Ray Hooker (age 98) passed away in Aurora, CO on January 24, 2024. He was born on June 21, 1925 to parents Giles Eldridge and Lucy Myrtle Childress Hooker in Stokes County, NC. He spent his childhood working on his parents farm. He served briefly in the Army during WWII before being honorably discharged. In 1949, he married Dorothy Elizabeth Noah. The two grew up together attending classes in the same one room schoolhouse. They were married 64 years and had three children, Cliff, Cheryl and Douglas.  They lived the majority of their married lives in Vienna and Warrenton, Virginia.   In the 1960s Dorothy and Ray heard the word of God and chose to serve him faithfully for the rest of their lives.   Ray had a long career with Nabisco.   He loved fishing and hunting in his free time. He had a passion for playing music on his fiddle or the piano. He possessed a love of history and enjoyed taking friends to Washington D.C. to enjoy the Smithsonians.  Above all, Ray enjoyed talking with his friends and family.  

 

In September of 2013, Ray married Maria Hartig.  They resided in Mt. Airy, NC where Ray enjoyed playing bluegrass music with local friends.  In 2018 they moved to Denver, CO.  Ray was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in April of 2013 and his son Douglas Hooker in 2014 as well as his siblings, Marie Tolbert, Duaine, Gordon, Homer, and Conley Hooker.  He is survived by his wife, Maria Hartig Hooker of Denver, CO, his two children, Clifton Hooker (Julie) of Warrenton, VA, and Cheryl DeJonge (Duane) of Centennial, CO, his 8 grandchildren, Elizabeth Castle (Brendan), Joanna Hooker, Madeline Hooker, Thomas Hooker, Kevin Hooker, James Hooker, Lindsey Lehman (Elmer) and Tanner DeJonge (Alexis) and 7 great-grandchildren (Carter, Kasen, Camden, and Kai Lehman, and Gerritt, Elin, and Esme DeJonge).  

 

A funeral service will take place at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy, NC on Monday, February 5th at 11:00 AM with Interment to follow at Skyline Memorial Garden.  The family will receive friends on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time for the service at the funeral home.
