Raymond Reid Vernon, Sr

Mr. Raymond "Pockets" Reid Vernon, Sr., 76, of Mount Airy, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, August 24, 2012, from North Carolina Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Vernon was born July 2, 1936, in Surry County, the son of the late John Luther and Mae Collins Vernon. He retired from Mount Airy Furniture Factory and was a member of Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church. Raymond enjoyed a full and rich life with his family, church family, and friends. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Ethel Haynes Vernon of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and the Rev. Robbie Sizemore of Hayesville; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Reid Vernon, Jr. and Kathy Vernon of Portland, TN; five grandchildren, Amanda Messick and John Sizemore, both of Mount Airy, Chris Vernon and Jessica Vernon, both of Portland, TN, and Melissa Vernon of Washington State; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and Bill Wood of Dobson and Betty and Bill Glass of Cana, VA; a brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Dot Vernon of Cana, VA; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Clayton and Barbara Haynes of Winston-Salem. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vernon was preceded in death by two grandsons, Nathaniel William Vernon and Cameron Dale Vernon; a sister, Ruth Branscome; and two brothers, Lester Vernon and Wilburn Vernon. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Robbie Sizemore, Dr. David Sparks, the Rev. Deward Scott, and the Rev. Todd Kiger officiating. Burial will follow in the New Venture Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
