Rebecca Rosetta Smith

Dec 31, 1952 — Oct 22, 2026

Rebecca Rosetta Smith, 73, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Born on December 31, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Charles Arnold Smith and Beulah Boyd Smith of Cana, Virginia.

A 1971 graduate of Carroll County High School, Rebecca attended Surry Community College before earning her Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees in Marketing and Education from Virginia Tech. She dedicated nearly 30 years to teaching business and marketing at North Surry High School. Following her teaching career, she spent twelve years as a full-time caregiver for her mother and her brother Mitchell, relocating to the family home to manage their daily care.

Rebecca shared a deep bond with her niece, Erica, serving as a parental figure throughout her life. The family affectionately nicknamed her "the baby snatcher." Together, they traveled across Europe and took annual trips to New York City for Broadway musicals during Erica's high school years. Rebecca and Erica lived together for many years, sharing a relationship filled with humor and affection.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her older brothers, William Boyd Smith and Charles Mitchell Smith; her sister-in-law, Judy Goodman Smith; and her nephew-in-law, Spencer Key, Jr. She is survived by her younger brother, Spencer Smith, and her niece, Erica Smith Key.

Our family extends our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who visited and supported Rebecca over the past two months.

A private graveside service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Richmond Fisher House, which provided cost-free lodging for Rebecca while she supported her brother Mitchell through his medical recovery:
