The Rev. Jesse Milton Head, Sr., 88, of Morganton, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, May 31, 2015, in Valdese. The Rev. Head was born October 25, 1926, in Iredell County, the oldest of two sons born to the late Clarence and Maggie Mize Head. The Rev. Head was ordained to the work of the gospel ministry on July 9, 1950, at Hawthorne Road Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. From 1950 through 2005, he pastored Bethel Baptist Church in Yadkinville (1950-1953), Friendship Baptist Church in Morganton (1953-1961), Forest Hill Baptist Church in Winston-Salem (1961-1971), Starnes Cove Baptist Church in Asheville (1971-1986), Mountain View No. 2 Baptist Church in Morganton (1986-1991), and Silver Creek Baptist Church in Morganton (1994-2005). Until his death, he was a member of Silver Creek. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Katherine Duckworth Head of the home; four children and their spouses, Milton and Ivy Head of Mount Airy, Wesley and Mayfair Head of Tallahassee, FL, Anna and Tom Mehaffey of Clemmons, and Jonathan and Glenda Head of Kernersville; his grandchildren, David and Marissa Head of Concord, Lawrence and Kacie Head of Orlando, FL, DeAnne and Paul Danley of Mount Airy, Jessica Ashburn of Washington, DC, Adam and Heather Mehaffey of Gastonia, Abby and Guy Kelpin and Andy and Margaret Mehaffey, all of Winston-Salem, Daniel Head of Middleburg, FL, and Catherine Head of Kernersville; and sixteen great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, the Rev. Head was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Lorene Dull Head; a grandson, Jonathan Eric Head; and a brother, William Mailon Head. A service of worship and a celebration of the Rev. Head's life will be held Thursday, June 4, 2015, at 11:00 AM at Missionary Ridge Baptist Church in Morganton, with the Rev. Larry Cline and the Rev. Larry Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church. A graveside service will follow at 4:00 PM at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, under the direction of the Rev. Mark A. Reece, Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to their local church or charitable organization. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Head family.
