Rev. Milton Junior Sewell

Rev. Milton Junior Sewell died on June 6, 2015 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. Born on March 19, 1928 into a sharecropping family in East Bend, Milton began a journey that has affected the lives of so many people. He finished high school in 1944 and then taught school for a year in 1945. In 1946 he entered the U.S. Navy where he served until 1949. Shortly after his discharge from the Navy he married Jo Ann Hobson on September 16, 1949. In 1953, Milton felt called into Christian Ministry, and spent the remainder of his life serving as pastor of seven churches, interim pastor of ten churches, and revival speaker through the foothills of North Carolina and in the edge of Virginia. Most recently he ministered regularly to the residence of Ridgecrest retirement home in Mount Airy. Through the 1950's Milton worked in various places, including a taxi service, Mclean Trucking Company, and at the Winston-Salem Journal. In 1960 he began a career with the Mount Airy News that led to him being named editor, where he helped to build the paper into the largest semi-daily paper in the state. A heart attack in 1973 forced him to retire from the paper in 1974, and from that time on he worked exclusively as a full time pastor until his retirement in 1995. Surviving Mr. Sewell are his wife of more than 65 years, Jo Ann Sewell of the home, his five children and their spouses, Gary Sewell and wife Pam of Mount Airy, Tony Sewell and wife Susan of Mountain Park, Cheryl Easter and husband Mike of Mount Airy, Rick Sewell and wife Donna of Rustburg, Virginia, and Marty Sewell and wife Melissa of Pilot Mountain. The Sewells proudly boast of their eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Rev. Sewell was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Earl and Annie Ester Bean Sewell, and a sister, Peggy Nance. The legacy of Milton Sewell cannot be measured, but it leaves a proud heritage for this family, and a meaningful challenge to all who have known him. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 2:00 PM Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick Sewell, the Rev. Marty Sewell, and Dr. David Smith officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials should be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Rd., Dobson, NC 27017 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
