Mr. Richard S. Bullis, 96, of Mount Airy, went home to be with the Lord on Friday morning, August 28, 2026. Mr. Bullis was born August 14, 1930, in Forsyth County, the son of the late Thomas Calvin Bullis and Lydia Julitta Chatham Bullis Hutchins. Richard was reared in Winston-Salem and proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Korean Conflict. On December 22, 1950, Richard married the love of his life, Iola Mamie Hicks. Together, they shared 70 years of marriage and were a cherished part of the Mount Airy community. Richard and Iola farmed for several years, and he later worked at Proctor-Silex Inc. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tim Atkins of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bullis was preceded in death by his wife, Iola Mamie Hicks Bullis; his sweet and precious granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Atkins; two sisters, Lois Bullis Jackson and Mary Bullis Hanks; a brother, Wiley Hampton Bullis; two half-sisters, Donnivee C. Bullis and Erie Bullis; and a half-brother, William James Bullis. A service of worship and celebration of Richard’s life will be held Monday, August 31, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Elder Carlton Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, P.O. Box 325, Dobson, NC 27017.
