Richard Arnold Mooneyhan

Mr. Richard Arnold Mooneyhan, 92, of Lambsburg, VA, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

Mr. Mooneyhan was born April 2, 1934, in Mount Airy, a place he dearly loved and was always proud to call his hometown. He was the son of the late John Alton and Lettie Evelyn Atkins Mooneyhan.

Arnold worked in several textile mills during his early years before fulfilling his passion by owning and operating Mountain View Guitar Shop in Toast. He was a simple man who found joy in life’s quiet blessings and never sought recognition for himself. Content with honest work and the company of those he loved, he lived with humility, kindness, and unwavering integrity.

Gifted with skilled hands and a patient spirit, Arnold was an exceptional craftsman who built and restored musical instruments with remarkable care and precision. Every instrument he touched reflected not only his craftmanship but also his appreciation for the beauty of music and the happiness it could bring to others. His work remains a lasting testament to his dedication, creativity, and love for his craft.

Arnold’s love for music extended far beyond his workshop. He especially enjoyed gathering with his friends, “The Outhouse Jammers,” on Saturday mornings in downtown Mount Airy, where they shared music, fellowship, and laughter. Those weekly jam sessions were among his greatest pleasures and reflected his love for traditional music and the friendships he treasured.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Steve King; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Debbie Mooneyhan; seven grandchildren, Sean Graham, Patrick Mooneyhan, Lauren Mooneyhan, Christopher Mooneyhan, Penny Utt, Sarah Absher, and Brian Johns; six great-grandchildren, Katie, Taylor, Julia Rose, Megan, Hannah, and Dustin; several great-great-grandchildren; his stepmother, Nina Bell Mooneyhan; a half-sister, Kimbel Mooneyhan Middleton; two half-brothers, Matthew Mooneyhan and Brett Mooneyhan; and a special friend, Cindy Nicodemus.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Mooneyhan was preceded in death by his wife, Cassie Lynn Jones Mooneyhan; a grandson, Dustin Mooneyhan; two sisters, Hattie Ruth Jenkins and Sharon “Pat” Tucker; and a brother, George Alton Mooneyhan.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Darren Slate officiating. No formal visitation will be held. However, family and friends may pay their respects at Moody Funeral Home in Mount on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM, and on Thursday, August 6, 2026, from 7:30 until 9:30 AM.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for the exceptional love, care, and compassion shown to Arnold, with special appreciation to his nurse, Wanda, for her devoted kindness and support.
