Mr. Richard “Red” Clarence Hiatt, 80, of Lowgap, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Born March 12, 1945, in Surry County, he was the son of the late Clarence Oten Hiatt and Virginia Belle Hiatt. Mr. Hiatt retired after more than 40 years as a truck driver, hauling U.S. Mail for Hiatt Trucking most of his career and later for Dude Smith Trucking. He always enjoyed telling big tales and listening to good stories that would give him a big laugh. He also thoroughly enjoyed bluegrass music and square dancing. He was a loving husband and father. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Jo Ann Creed Hiatt; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard Brandon Hiatt and Lila Hiatt; his grandson Breven Hiatt and stepson Grant Cockerham. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Carroll Hiatt. The family extends sincere appreciation to Mountain Valley Hospice and the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for their compassionate care.
