Robert Oah Thomas

Mr. Robert Oah Thomas, 96, of Sparger Rd. Mount Airy, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 20, 2014. Mr. Thomas was born March 1, 1917, in Surry County, the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Zelphia Suzanne Jones Thomas. He proudly served our country in the United States Army. As a result of his bravery and commitment, he was awarded a silver star during World War II. He was a member of F.E. Walker, Sr.-Jr. Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary, Chapter #61. In May of 2005, Mr. Thomas was on the first Flight of Honor to Washington, DC to see the World War II Memorial. Mr. Thomas was a dedicated member of Stewarts Creek Primitive Baptist Church, where he had actively served as a deacon since January 1, 1960. He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jean T. Mathis, Joyce T. and Gary Hensley, and Wanda T. and Doug Messer; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Joyce Thomas; grandchildren, Robert and Michelle Thomas, Bethany and Stephen Smeraglia, Angela Thomas, Shauna and Patrick Sanders, Wade Thomas, Curtis Carrico, Tommy Carrico, Kimberly and Michael Nester, Teresa and Joey Riggins, Lynette and Michael Smith, Kenny and Jackie Messer, Andy and Brandy Messer, Chad and Ann Hensley, Luciana Haggee and Marcie Mabe; twenty-six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Payne Thomas; a sister, Violet Thomas and seven brothers, Harvey Lee, Grover, Walter, Ellis, Cuban, Tyler B. and Bruce Thomas. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, January 24, 2014, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Elder Gary Lowe, Elder Arwood Edwards, Lic. Coy Stewart, and Lic. Bobby Easter officiating. Burial will follow at Mona Vista Memory Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday, January 23, 2014.
