Mr. Roy Ray Dunbar. Age 80, of Mt. Airy, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026 at Dunmore Plantation in Dobson. He was born on June 13, 1946 in Surry County to the late William Frank and Annie Snow Dunbar.
Mr. Dunbar was employed on 3rd shift at Russell Corporation for 29 years, retiring in 2008. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, gardening and nascar racing on Sunday afternoons. For years he enjoyed farming with his family on their tobacco farm. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was known as a quiet man that never talked much but always had a smile on his face. Even when the dementia took his mind, it never took his spirit.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Penny Dunbar, Laurie Holderfield Wade (Doug); grandsons, Josh Holderfield (AJ), Bailey Holderfield (Rachel), Landon Wade; one great-granddaughter and four great-grandsons; sister, Virginia Louise Gwyn (Bill); brother, Donnie Dunbar (Pam); sister-in-law, Jo Ann Dunbar Johnson (Walter); several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Mr. Dunbar was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Dale Dunbar; son-in-law, Jeffrey Clifford Holderfield; nephew, Bradley Monroe Gwyn; special companion for over 30 years, Eula Grimes Martin.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026 at 2:30 PM at Ivy Green Baptist Church Cemetery with service conducted by Rev. Arlis Thomas. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 PM until the time to leave for the service at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. The family will receive friends at the home of Bailey and Rachel Holderfield.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all the nurses and aides, administrators, owners, & loving staff of Dunmore Plantation for Roy’s care since December of 2021. They became our family, not just staff, after Roy’s battle with his dementia illness. They would also like to sincerely thank the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their loving care and support services of Roy since August of 2025.
