Mr. Rubin Thomas, 87, of 2890 Wards Gap Road, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2011, at his home. Mr. Thomas was born March 13, 1924, in Surry County, son of the late Robert Martin and Martha Elizabeth McMillian Thomas. Rubin proudly served our country in the United States Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Edith Clara Palmer Thomas of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Carrie and Mike Reddish and Libby Escamila, all of Walla Walla, WA, and Margaret Kump of Post Falls, ID; a son, Joe Wagoner of Mount Airy; five stepdaughters and their spouses, Sonya and Ralph Smith, Tonya Boyd, and Karen Flippin, all of Mount Airy, Rhonda and Clarence Golding of Lambsburg, VA, and Denise and Greg Watson of Ararat; two stepsons, Keith Boyd and Rayburn Boyd, both of Mount Airy; two grandchildren; twelve stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jackie Scott of Cana, VA, and Maggie Brown of Mount Airy; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Frank and Lois Thomas and Jim Thomas, all of Cana, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by four sisters, Sarah Chandler, Geneva Coe, Myrtle Davenport, and Hallie Smith; and three brothers, Roscoe Thomas, Wyse Thomas, and Sam Thomas. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Robbie Vance officiating. Military honors will also be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. There will not be a formal visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or the Salem United Methodist Church Building Fund, 124 Myers Drive, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
