Ms. Sandra Jean Smith Carico, 52, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday afternoon, December 29, 2014, at her home. Ms. Carico was born December 23, 1962, in Guilford County, to Patricia Foye Hall Smith and the late Gerald Morton Smith. Sandra earned a Master of Science degree in speech pathology from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was a speech therapist at Mountain Park Elementary School and had a special gift working with preschoolers. Ms. Carico was a member of the Surry County Beekeepers Association, was an avid mountain biker, and loved the outdoors. Sandra was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by her mother, Patricia Foye Hall Smith of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia Lynn and Brian Holbrook of Lewisville; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael David and Debbie Smith of Greensboro; a niece, Erin Smith of Greensboro; two nephews, Sam Smith of Nashville, TN, and Ben Smith of Kansas City, KS; a special aunt and namesake, Beverly Jean Payne of Franklin, TN; and two special cousins, Amy Payne of Cynthiana, KY, and Jonathan Payne of Nashville, TN. A service to celebrate Sandra's life will be held Friday, January 2, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church. A private inurnment will be held at Skyline Memory Gardens at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, North Carolina Chapter, 401 Harrison Oaks Boulevard, Suite 200, Cary, NC 27513. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
