Mr. Sandy Vestal Hutchens, Jr., 80 years old of Mount Airy, formerly of Los Angeles, CA passed away on June 10, 2025. He was born in Surry County, May 5, 1945, the son of the late Sandy Vestal Hutchens, Sr. and Frances Gwyn Hutchens. During his teen years he was a well-known lifeguard and swimming instructor at Mount Airy Country Club, where he taught many of today’s local businessmen and women. Sandy graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1964. After graduating from Wake Forest University. Sandy established himself well in the corporate world. For 25 years he was a corporate executive with a Fortune 500 company. He served on the Board of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists where he served as Chairman of the Pacific Section. Supported by his knowledge of sports and fitness, Sandy purchased Angel City Gym in West Hollywood, CA in 2000. During that time, he was elected to the Board of the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for four years and Vice President of Special Events. He also served on the Board of the Business Merchant Improvement District for the Arts, serving also as Chairman. He was actively involved in numerous philanthropic projects. He served as Chairman of the Board for the Van Ness Recovery House, a non-profit treatment center for young addicts and recovering alcoholics. Sandy was a proud and active member of the LBGTQ community in the Los Angeles area for many years. While living in Beverly Hills he was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church, and upon returning to Mount Airy joined Trinity Episcopal Church. He is survived by his longtime best friend Mike Angioletti of Laguna Beach, CA, friend Tim Aitkins, two local first cousins, Sara Jane Leach and her husband Walter of Beulah, their children and grandchildren and Jean Lester Gwyn of Dobson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael (Mike) Gwyn Hutchens. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 472 North Main Street, Mount Airy 27030 on June 21 at 4:00 p.m. Donations can be given in memory of Sandy to Trinity Episcopal Church or to Surry Friends of Youth, 115 West Lebanon Street, Mount Airy 27030
