Mr. Scottie Glenn Mayes, 62, of Cana, VA, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, NC. Born with a spirit as strong as the Virginia hills, Scottie lived a life marked by service, hard work, and devotion to his family. Scottie was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps., serving from 1981 to 1985 and was stationed in Okinawa, the Philippines, Twentynine Palms, California, and Jacksonville, NC. His sense of duty and resilience, forged during his military service, remained a cornerstone of his character throughout his life. Following in the footsteps of his beloved father, Alvin Mayes, Scottie built a career in highway construction and later drove a semi-truck, embodying a strong work ethic and dedication. His generous spirit extended beyond his lifetime as an organ donor offering the gift of life to others and reflecting on his lifelong commitment to helping those in need. Scottie is survived by his mother, Lois Mayes; his children, Kara Mayes and Travis Mayes; grandchildren, Aubrey Mayes, Kinsley Mayes and Kyler Mayes; brother Danny Mayes (Tina); sister, Deena Bryant (Brandon); and his former wife and friend, April Puckett Mayes. He also leaves behind his loyal dogs, Oreo and Princess, who will deeply miss their devoted companion. Scottie’s legacy is one of unwavering strength, loyalty and love for his family and country. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. A celebration of Scottie’s life will be held on Saturday October 4, 2025, at 2:00pm in the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in Scottie’s honor.
