Mrs. Shirley Alene Freeman Debnam, 91, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 2, 2025, at Northern Regional Hospital. Mrs. Debnam was born August 20, 1933, and was the daughter of the late John Preston and Ada Maye Fine Freeman. Born and raised in Galax, VA, she carried the warmth and values of her hometown with her throughout her life. In her early years, she was a talented beautician, known for her steady hands and the gift of making others feel beautiful inside and out. Later, she transitioned into retail work, where her kind demeanor and dedication to customer service made a lasting impression on coworkers and customers alike. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Daniel “Joe” Debnam; a daughter and son-in-law, Tyra and Rodney Badgett; two sons, Johnny J. Barr and Joseph Michael Barr; three grandchildren, Abby Collins, Jess Badgett, and Jake Kleitz; two great-grandchildren, Finlee Collins and Oaklee Collins; three stepchildren, W. Duane Debnam, Q. Josica Debnam, and Aesha Drozdowski; three stepgrandchildren, Tre’von Arthur Debnam, Amare Debnam, and Kamani Tuggles; two great-stepgrandchildren, Lyric Debnam and Kalila Debnam; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Debnam was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Newman; and three brothers, Scott Freeman, Kyle Freeman, and Harold Freeman. A graveside memorial service will be held Thursday, July 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Gladesboro Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Luis Medina officiating. No formal visitation will be held. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is respectfully serving the Debnam family.
