Shirley Blanche Simpson Nichols

Mrs. Shirley Blanche Simpson Nichols, 89, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday night, December 29, 2025, at Central Continuing Care, surrounded by compassionate caregivers. Mrs. Nichols was born June 13, 1936, in Surry County, one of twelve children born to the late Eugene and Josie Bingman Simpson. Shirley was raised in a large family where she learned the values of hard work, faith, and devotion to family that guided her throughout her life. In 1973, Shirley was united in marriage to Walter John Nichols. Although they were not blessed with children, the couple shared a devoted life together until his passing on March 31, 1997. She was employed at Washington Mills for many years, where she was known as a dependable and dedicated worker. A woman of quiet strength, she lived her life grounded in her Christian faith, which provided her comfort and guidance through the years. Shirley is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will continue to honor her memory. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by eight sisters, Roxie Simpson, Thelma Carter, Kathleen East, Vernice Bowman, Eva Durham, Tavie Shumate, Stella Marion, and Georgia Sumner; and three brothers, Fred Simpson, Delmar Simpson, and Gilbert Simpson. No formal visitation or service will be held. Mrs. Nichols will be laid to rest beside her late husband in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love, compassion, and care shown by the staff at Central Continuing Care. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
