Shirley M. Stevens, age 81, of Pilot Mountain, NC, passed away on October 25, 2026, after an extended illness. She was born on October 12, 1945, in Surry County, NC to the late Ernest Lee Montgomery and the late Nancy Viola Beck Montgomery. Shirley graduated from North Stokes High School in 1965 and married her husband, the late James Robert Stevens, Sr., the same day that she graduated. They were married for 50 years, minus 2 days. James and Shirley had many happy years together living in Pilot Mountain, NC.
Shirley and her late husband, James were world travelers when they were younger. They traveled to England, Malaysia, Canada and Turkey. She was particularly enthused about Turkey. She said the people were so friendly and the children followed them around calling James “Poppy” or “Papa”. After one episode of the kids following them around, she laughingly turned to James and asked “How long have you been over here?” Shirley had a great sense of humor. She and her husband were faithful member of Hills Grove Baptist for over 40 years.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, James Edward Stevens, Jr., and her half-sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Montgomery Warden. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, grandmother and friend, who will surely be missed by all who knew her. In fact, to know Shirley was to love her. Left to cherish her memory are one grandchild, Robert Edward (Eddie) Stevens and wife Andrea, Eddie’s children, Branson and Bailey Stevens, Maddie and AJ Roten, and a niece, Carla Renee Warden Houck and Tim Mabe; best friends, Kathleen Mueller, Mary Romine, and a multitude of many other friends.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held at Hill’s Grove Baptist church on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Caleb Thomas, Rev. Charles Stevens, and Rev. Terry Watson officiating. Mrs. Stevens will be buried at the church between her late husband and son. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 26, 2026, from 1:00 PM until time of the service. Pallbearers will be as follow, Ronnie Rogers, David Cox, Donald Mueller, Walter (Tim) Stevens, Eddie Stevens, and Tim Mabe.
