Stella Louise Jones Frye, 91, of Mount Airy, passed away on May 17, 2026. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was born on April 6, 1935, in Galax, Virginia, to Dr. Robert Luther Jones and Mamie Mae Pulliam Jones. She was raised in Grayson County and graduated from Galax High School in 1955. Following high school, she attended Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing, pursuing her passion for caring for others. On March 18, 1956, she married the love of her life, Carlos Edgar Frye. Together, they shared nearly 70 wonderful years of marriage and raised five children. Stella dedicated herself to her work and community, serving as a CNA at Mount Airy Hospital, working for many years at Roses Department Store, and later at Goodwill. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Carlos Edgar Frye; two sons, Kendall Ray Frye and Thomas Matthew Frye; two brothers, Robert Emmet “Bobby” Jones II and R. L. “Buddy” Jones II; and two sisters, Virginia Florence Jones Cox and Alice Mae Jones Jenkins. Stella is survived by her children: Bob Frye and his wife, Nancy; Fred Frye and his wife, Evelyn; and Jennifer Arnder and her husband, Tim. She is also survived by nine cherished grandchildren — Ian, Hannah, Jared, Emma, Lauren, MacKenzie, Whitney, Aubree, and Alisha — and seven great-grandchildren. Our mother loved with her whole heart and soul. She was a strong woman who never wavered in her faith through all the trials and tribulations of life, and she certainly saw her share. She was a woman of high character and morals, demonstrated daily by the example she set for her children. Our mother was faithful to our dad, whom she dearly loved for 70 years. She was never a worldly person; she never spoke about money, accomplishments, or material possessions. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren unconditionally, and they were her world. Stella understood the value of time and loved spending it cooking and gathered around the table with those she loved. She had a love not only for her family, but for everyone she met. She had a unique ability to see the good in people and possessed a calm spirit that drew others to her. She will be remembered not only for her kindness and devotion to her family, but for the way she treated everyone she met. She had a rare gift for making people feel loved, welcomed, and valued. Her gentle heart, warm smile, and compassionate spirit touched countless lives. She never spoke ill of others and lived her life with grace, humility, and quiet strength. To know her was to feel cared for, and her memory will remain a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Services Chapel, with Reverend Rickey Martin and Reverend Dwight Sechrist officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday at the funeral home from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Moody Funeral Services has been entrusted with the arrangements.
