Mrs. Sylvia Gray Cox Fields, 81, of Pilot Mountain, passed away Sunday morning, May 7, 2017, at her home. Mrs. Fields was born November 4, 1935, in Carroll County, VA, one of nine children born to the late Golden and Belle Miller Cox. Sylvia retired as vice president of operations from New River Furniture, after 40 years of service in furniture manufacturing. She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church in Galax, VA, and attended First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain for the last 20 years. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Jansen Bartlett of Pilot Mountain and Donna and Bean Fogle of Caldwell, OH; her grandchildren, Chelsea and Brent Wheeler, Karrie and Josh Tilley, Sara Bartlett, and Allie Fogle; her great-grandchildren, John Jansen Wheeler, Madison Tilley, and McKenzie Tilley; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Shirley and Gene Worrell of Hillsville, VA, Ruby Bobbitt of Galax, VA, and Sue and Randall Hawks of Fancy Gap, VA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert “Junior” and Zona Cox of Independence, VA, and Ray and Shirley Cox of Galax, VA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Fields was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Fields; a special nephew, William Golden Cox; a sister, Kay Richardson; and two brothers, Billy Cox and Kyle Cox. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Oakland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Hunter officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love, compassion, and care shown by her caregivers around the clock and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Oakland United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Susan White, 3000 Pipers Gap Road, Galax, VA 24333.
