Tycho Heckard Wood, Sr.

Mr. Tycho Heckard Wood, Sr., 93, of Mount Airy, passed away early Sunday morning, September 24, 2023, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.  Mr. Wood was born August 26, 1930, in Surry County, one of six children born to the late Ernest Lee and Daisy Mae Epperson Wood.  Tycho co-owned Wood’s Television and various other businesses over the years, including The Mount Airy Times, WSYD, and WSTH.  He was a faithful member and longtime deacon of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church.  Tycho was a member of Renfro Masonic Lodge #691 AF and AM for more than 60 years.  He served as Master of the lodge in 1964 and 1978 and served as the District Deputy Grand Master from 1978 until 1981.  Additionally, he was a member of Mount Airy Chapter #18 Order of the Eastern Star and a Shriner for over 60 years.  Mr. Wood was a member of Mount Airy Lions Club, serving as president in the 2005-2006 term, and he was elected and served as a city commissioner in Mount Airy for four years (1995-1999).  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.  Tycho is survived by a daughter, Debra Inscore; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tycho Wood, Jr. and Marie Wood and Johnny and Bobbie Wood; six grandchildren, Chad Wood, Dr. Amy Howell and her husband, Dr. Eric Howell, Abbie Kinnear and her husband, Kasey Kinnear, Hannah Wood, Justin Inscore, Brittany Anderson and her husband, Paul Anderson; nine great-grandchildren, Gabbie Wood, Kaitlyn Wood, Aidan Howell, Evan Howell, Knox Kinnear, Kensie Kinnear, Finley Wood, Lauren Anderson, and Allison Anderson; and a sister, Hortense Hall.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Pansy Louise Dollyhigh Wood, who passed away July 1, 2023; a son-in-law, Jeff Inscore; and four brothers, Hersey Wood, Brockton Wood, Woody Wood, and Mack Wood.  A service of worship and celebration of Tycho’s life will be held Friday, September 29, 2023, at 2:30 PM at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert McCrary and the Rev. Kevin Minix officiating.  Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with Masonic rites conducted by Renfro Masonic Lodge #691 AF and AM.  The family will receive friends Friday from 1:30 until 2:30 PM at the church.  The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 27, Mount Airy, NC  27030; Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mount Airy, NC  27030; or the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC  27017.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
