Mrs. Velma Nelson Wall, 99, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2024, and was preceded in her passing by her husband of 66 years, John Kelly Wall, who in the 1980s was the elected sheriff of Charlotte Mecklenburg.  Velma was born August 7, 1924, in Danbury, the only child of the late Roy M. and Annie Mae Nelson of Mount Airy.  Velma graduated from Mount Airy High School and then attended High Point University and American Institute of Banking.  Upon marrying her childhood sweetheart, John Kelly Wall, they moved to what is now known as Edwards Air Force Base in California during World War II.  In 1949, Velma and John Kelly moved to Charlotte where Velma went into banking and John Kelly joined the Mecklenburg County police department.  Velma worked for First Union National Bank which later merged into Wachovia Bank, now known as Wells Fargo.  While at First Union, Velma had a successful career in banking, becoming the first female branch manager in Charlotte.  Velma was an avid reader, bridge player, and canasta player, joining with her ladies’ group from Pritchard Memorial Church in Charlotte.  Velma was also a 30-plus year member of the Charlotte Charity League.  After retirement, Velma and her daughter, Bonnie Greenberg, enjoyed shopping and vacationing together while Velma and John Kelly spent many summers at their Fancy Gap, VA, summer home, where they spent their days gardening, entertaining friends, and raising cattle.  Velma is survived by her daughter, Bonnie W. Greenberg and her husband, Daryl Greenberg, of Charlotte; a grandson, David R. Brabham and his wife, Lacey, and their two daughters, Raelee and Ashton; and a granddaughter, Rebecca B. Morgan and her fiancé, Steven Cook, and great-grandchildren, Peyton, Eva Marie, and Brooks Kelly of Monks Corner, SC.  A graveside service to celebrate the life of Velma Nelson Wall will be conducted by the Reverend Stan Heiser at Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 1:00 PM.  There will be no visitation at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC  28203; or Mount Airy Friends Church, 109 West Wilson Street, Mount Airy, NC  27030.  Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is serving the Wall family.
