Verlie Gay Hicks Hill

Mrs. Verlie Gay Hicks Hill, 89, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday evening, June 3, 2016, at Golden Living Center. Mrs. Hill was born November 9, 1926, in Surry County, one of ten children born to the late Wiley F. and Maude Lula Watson Hicks. Verlie retired as a belt captain from Spencer’s Inc. after 46 years of service. She was a dedicated Christian and a member of the Primitive Baptist faith. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and David Mathews of Cary; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ronald Edward and Carolyn Hill and Michael Dean Hill, all of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bertie Mae Hall, Iola and Richard Bullis, and Gladys and Bobby Wilson, all of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Herman Weldon and Barbara Jean Hicks of Ararat; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Edward Hill; a grandson, Charles Michael Hill; an infant brother, Broadus Hicks; and four brothers, Coney Everette Hicks, Arlis Leonard Hicks, Jay Ira Hicks, and Norris Allen Hicks. The funeral service will be held Monday, June 6, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Elder Rodney Marshall officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of Ronald Edward and Carolyn Hill at 233 Dudley Avenue, Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Golden Living Center and Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
