Mrs. Vicki Mae Atkins Bowers, 50, of 137 Wrong Way Lane, Ararat, NC, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Bowers was born June 30, 1958, in Forsyth County, to Russell Johnson Atkins and Ivey Jean Lewis Atkins. Vicki had a heart for caring for people. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and a volunteer for Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. She was also a member of Order Of Comfort Roses (OCR), devoting time to do memorial services for Confederate Soldiers and placing flags and flowers on their graves. Surviving are her husband, Tony Bowers of the home; her parents, Russell Johnson Atkins and Ivey Jean Lewis Atkins of Ararat; her paternal grandfather, Cecil Atkins of Ararat; several nieces and nephews; several aunts and uncles; and many special friends. Mrs. Bowers was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Victor John and Stella Mae Marion Lewis; and her paternal grandmother, Lydia Mae Atkins. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Kermit L. Gray, and burial will follow in the Little Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
