Mrs. Victoria Jane "Pat" Childress Hardy, 79, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday morning, November 21, 2014, at Central Continuing Care. Mrs. Hardy was born September 28, 1935, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Gran and Mozelle Caudle Childress. Pat retired as a licensed practical nurse from Northern Hospital of Surry County after 30 years of service. After her retirement from the hospital, she worked for the American Red Cross. In the mid-1990s, Pat worked very diligently to establish a local support group for caregivers and families who had a loved one suffering from Alzheimer's. Mrs. Hardy was a longtime and faithful member of Franklin Heights United Methodist Church until her health declined. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Vickie Hardy of Mocksville, and Martha and John Palmer and Kathryn and Dierik Freed, all of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, James Smith "Smitty" Hardy, Jr. and Margaret Hardy of Stokesdale; her grandchildren, Jason Hardy of Greensboro, Debra and Eric Hufschmitt of Pleasant Garden, Wesley Palmer and his special friend, Kayla Cline, of Gilbert, WV, and Cody and Katie Palmer, Kaylee Freed, and Hettie Freed, all of Mount Airy; her great-grandchildren, Virginia Hufschmitt and Cassie Hufschmitt, both of Pleasant Garden, and Jerzey Palmer of Gilbert, WV; two sisters, Mary Lou Morin of Kingsport, TN, and Sue McCreary of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Gayle Childress of Asheville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hardy was preceded in death by her husband, James Smith Hardy, Sr.; her adopted parents, George Oscar and Ida Childress Monday; three sisters, Lillian Ammons, Katherine Booth, and Jessie Matthews; and six brothers, Junior Childress, Gran Childress, Paul Monday, Dick Monday, Tom Monday, and Harry Monday. The funeral service will be held Monday, November 24, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Franklin Heights United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ryan Mendenhall and the Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of Martha and John Palmer, 693 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy.
