William "Bill" Monroe Goings

Mr. William “Bill” Monroe Goings, age 91, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday May 17, 2025, at his residence. He was born September 9, 1933, in Surry County, to the late Elmer Emmett Goings and the late Betty Rosetta Amburn Goings. Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of over 63 years, Faye Atkins Goings; daughters and son-in-law, Lynn and David Brown, Betty Sue Johnson, and Laura R. Goings and Donnie Mills ; grandchildren, Tyler Johnson (Lauren). Lindsey Collins (Drew), Kara Renegar (Matt), Kinsey Stanley (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Jade Collins, Maddie Browne, Kalyn Collins, Macy Collins, Hudson Renegar, Tatum Renegar, Brooks Johnson, Stetson Stanley, and baby girl Stanley on the way; and great-great-grandchild, Coleson Burnett; sisters, Thelma Goings and Frances Worth (Wayne); and his brother, Clayton Goings (Judy); special friends, Virgil Bartley, Gary Fleming, Randy Hill and Loretta and Phillip Pittman; and special care givers, Jennifer, Mary Ellen, Anita, and Frances; and many nieces and nephews. As well as numerous cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, William Robert “Butch” Goings; his sisters, Louise Goings, Loretta Floyd, and Ida Mae Bryant; mother and father-in-law Vena and Woltz Atkins; brothers-in-law, Larry Atkins, Bobby Atkins, and Jimmy Cleve “Casey” Atkins.

Mr. Goings was a veteran of The United States Navy. He was a master carpenter, who owned his own construction business. Bill faithfully attended Roaring Gap Baptist Church. He was also an avid outdoorsman. Bill served on the Board of Directors of the NC Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was also known as a chef, gardener, dog trainer, and champion field trial showman. He actively supported his grandkids and great-grandkids as they participated in sports, fishing, hunting, and anything else they enjoyed. Bill enjoyed playing cards and going to auctions. He had fond memories of traveling the world during his time in the Navy. Later, Bill loved travelling throughout the United States hunting, fishing, and sightseeing with family and friends. He also enjoyed volunteering his cooking abilities for many community events that needed his help.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 20, 2025, from 1:30-3:00 PM at New Life Baptist Church (411 New Life Church Rd., Mt.Airy). Services will begin at 3:00 PM, in the church, with Rev. Joe Atkins and Rev. Kenneth Jessup officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post # 219 and Pilot Mountain Post # 9436 officiating. The family wishes to extend their thanks to Home Instead, Dr. Challie Minton, and AdaptHealth for the care shown to Mr. Goings. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Surry County Special Olympics Program, in honor of Jimmy Cleve “Casey” Atkins, PO 1467, Dobson NC 27017. Moody-Davis Funeral Service in Dobson is serving the Goings family.
