Mr. William Lee "Bill" Byrd, Sr., 70, of 349 White Pines Country Club Road, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday morning, May 3, 2012, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Byrd was born April 10, 1942, in Surry County, the son of the late Howard William and Lola Mae Hall Byrd. Bill served our country in the United States Army in the late 1950s. He worked as an assistant superintendent in commercial construction for many years and was a member of New Charity Baptist Church. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Lynn Byrd of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Ben, Stephanie, Rei, and Erin; a great-grandchild, Gracie Leigh; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary "Libby" and Jack Profitt and Carrie Mae and Stanley Blevins, all of Galax, VA: several nieces and nephews; and his extended family from New Charity Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Carol Pike Byrd; an infant son, Billy Ray Byrd; a daughter, Donna Hiatt Hayes; a sister, Nancy Byrd Duncan; and a brother, James Howard Byrd. The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Hank Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the Slate Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family will like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and the staff of Northern Hospital of Surry County for the loving and compassionate care given to Bill during his illness.
